WCFL Chicago Top 40 Charts 1965-1976 lists, by title and artist, every tune that charted on the WCFL-AM weekly music surveys in the Windy City from the first chart in late 1965 through the final survey in February of 1976 (less than a month before the station itself stopped playing top 40 music altogether). History of Pop Radio, Vol. 15: 1950-1951[OSA/Radio History]

History of Pop Radio, Vol. 15: 1950-1951[OSA/Radio History]

$7.98

The 15th and final volume of The History of Pop Radio, the German History label’s box set of popular music said to come from 1920 to 1951, hews more closely to the pop singles charts than any of its predecessors. Of the 20 tracks, 18 are records that made the pop charts, 16 of them as high as the Top Ten, and nine of those peaked at number one. Thus, the disc is a good representation of the most popular music of 1950-1951, including such major hits as “The Tennessee Waltz,” “Mona Lisa,” “Music Music Music” (in two versions), “I’ll Never Be Free,” “Cry,” “Because of You,” “Come on-a My House,” “Cold Cold Heart,” “My Heart Cries for You,” “Jealousy,” and “The Roving Kind,” sung by such major stars as the Ames Brothers, Patti Page, Frankie Laine, Kay Starr, Nat “King” Cole, Guy Mitchell, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, and Dinah Shore. The title The History of Pop Radio seems to imply that the recordings are airchecks, but they are in fact the original studio recordings, and any connection to radio is nominal. That slight deception is typical of the slipshod organization of the album and its predecessors. A notable problem, which is not unique to this volume, is chronological error. Though the set is said to cover the years 1950-1951, several titles do not come from that period. Dinah Shore’s “The Anniversary Song” was a hit in 1947, and Peggy Lee’s “Riders in the Sky” in 1949, and worst of all, there is a recording of “Route 66″ by the King Cole Trio said to come from 1950 that was really recorded in 1956. The album is available at a discount, however, and maybe you have to figure that for the cheap price you have to sacrifice something in scholarship. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 14: 1949 [OSA/Radio History]

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 14: 1949 [OSA/Radio History]

$7.98

In stark contrast to Vol. 13 of The History of Pop Radio, the 15-CD box set issued by the German History label, Vol. 14 eschews a pop hits approach in favor of a far more varied selection. True, some of the biggest pop hits of 1949 are featured (albeit not in their most successful versions), notably “Cruising Down the River,” “Mule Train,” “Far Away Places,” “Again,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” and “Lavender Blue,” and the artist list includes such major pop stars as Perry Como, Doris Day, and Buddy Clark. But there is also a significant representation from the R&B charts, with such tracks as Fats Domino’s “The Fat Man,” Wynonie Harris’ “All She Wants to Do Is Rock,” and Dinah Washington’s “It’s Too Soon to Know.” There are also plenty of non-hit tracks by blues and R&B legends like B.B. King and Professor Longhair. And Johnny Lee Wills’ country version of “Rag Mop” leads a selection of country material by Moon Mullican and Gene Autry, among others. From Broadway comes Ezio Pinza, singing “Some Enchanted Evening,” his signature song in South Pacific. And the young Marilyn Monroe is heard in an excerpt from the soundtrack of her first featured film performance in 1949′s Ladies of the Chorus, vamping her way through “Every Baby Needs a Da-Da-Daddy.” The result may not be a representative selection of the most popular recordings of 1949, but it suggests the musical upheaval on its way in the 1950s, and there are some terrific tracks. (The album title notwithstanding, radio has nothing to do with this collection. All the tracks are studio recordings except the Monroe soundtrack song.) ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 13: 1947-1948 [OSA/Radio History]

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 13: 1947-1948 [OSA/Radio History]

$7.98

While earlier volumes in The History of Pop Radio, the 15-CD German import box set, have contained a smattering of hit recordings in their survey of popular music dating back to 1920, the 13th volume, covering the years 1947-1948, is dominated by the period’s big hits in their most successful renditions, including Dick Haymes’ “Little White Lies,” Doris Day & Buddy Clark’s “Love Somebody,” Art Lund’s “Mam’selle,” Margaret Whiting’s “A Tree in the Meadow,” the Francis Craig Orchestra’s “Near You” (credited to singer Bob Lamm), Evelyn Knight’s “A Little Bird Told Me,” Doris Day’s “It’s Magic,” Dinah Shore’s “Buttons and Bows,” and Kay Kyser’s “Woody Woodpecker Song” and “On a Slow Boat to China.” Of the 20 selections, 14 were pop chart hits, and one of the six songs that wasn’t a pop hit, Wynonie Harris’ “Good Rocking Tonight,” topped the R&B charts. Other non-hits include the soundtrack recording of “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” from Song of the South by James Baskett, a song that was recorded for a hit by others, and “Carolina in the Morning” by Al Jolson. (Jolson had recently made a big comeback with the film The Jolson Story, and he would be heard singing “Carolina in the Morning” in the upcoming Jolson Sings Again.) Thus, in contrast to the often uneven quality of most of the volumes in the box set, Vol. 13 really provides an accurate portrait of the popular music of its period, from its dreamy romantic ballads to its novelties, with glimpses at the movies and the coming rock & roll revolution. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 11: 1943-1944 [OSA/Radio History]

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 11: 1943-1944 [OSA/Radio History]

$7.98

Vol. 11 in the 15-CD box set The History of Pop Music, released by the History label of Germany, claims to cover the years 1943 and 1944, and it provides a good sampling of some of the most popular songs and performers of that period, even if there is some filler and some recordings don’t actually fit into the chronological range. (Despite the album title, there is no apparent connection between these tracks and radio. They consist mostly of studio recordings with the occasional soundtrack thrown in, though “Pistol Packin’ Mama,” credited to Carmen Mastren & Ray McKinley, may be an Aircheck by the Glenn Miller Army Airforce Band.) The album opens appropriately enough with Frank Sinatra’s recording of “Night and Day,” which was in the charts in both 1943 and 1944 (and in 1942, for that matter), and introduces the most important and successful performer to emerge in this period. There are also hit recordings of “Brazil” (by Xavier Cugat), “It Could Happen to You” (by Jo Stafford), “No Love, No Nothin’” (by Ella Mae Morse), “I’m Beginning to See the Light” (by Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, though credited to singer Joya Sherrill), “Sentimental Journey” (by Les Brown & His Band of Renown, though credited to singer Doris Day), and “The Trolley Song” (by the Pied Pipers). Hit recordings of “Deep in the Heart of Texas” (by Bing Crosby) and “Symphony” (by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra, though credited to singer Liza Morrow) are also included, but the former came out in 1942 and the latter in 1945. Major African American performers such as Nat “King” Cole, Billy Eckstine, and Sarah Vaughan have selections, and Fred Astaire’s introduction of the standard “One for My Baby” has been borrowed from the soundtrack to The Sky’s the Limit. All of that makes for a good sampler of mid-’40s pop music, though there is also some padding in the form of inferior British imitations of American hits, the oddest of which is Carl Grayson’s copy of Spike Jones’ zany novelty version of “Cocktails for Two.” Who’d have thought that anyone would want — or be able — to replicate it? ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 12: 1945-1946 [OSA/Radio History]

The History of Pop Radio, Vol. 12: 1945-1946 [OSA/Radio History]

$7.98

The 12th volume of the 15-CD box set The History of Pop Radio released by the History label of Germany marks a big change from its immediate predecessors in the series. While previous volumes have included the occasional early country or R&B track, this one integrates such selections prominently, making for a varied mix of music from the period 1945-1946. As usual, some of the biggest hits of the era are included in their original recordings by some of the most popular recording artists, notably Les Brown’s “You Won’t Be Satisfied” (credited to singer Doris Day) and Dinah Shore’s “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly.” In fact, half of the tracks were pop chart hits. There are also titles from the country charts (Bob Wills’ “Roly Poly” and Merle Travis’ “Cincinnati Lou”). With the exceptions of the two Louis Jordan tracks, the R&B and jazz material does not feature any hits, but it does feature the likes of Nat “King” Cole, Champion Jack Dupree, Sarah Vaughan, and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, the last introducing “That’s All Right,” which Elvis Presley later covered for Sun Records in an early example of rock & roll. (The album title notwithstanding, these are almost all studio recordings, though Sarah Vaughan’s “Don’t Blame Me” is an Aircheck that the compilers seem to have borrowed from the LP Dizzy Gillespie ’46 Live at the Spotlite, originally released on the Swiss Hi-Fly label.) The result is an album perhaps less interested in chronicling the most popular music of the mid-’40s than in anticipating later trends. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

IRS Records was one of the giants of the post-punk era. They cultivated a roster filled with groundbreaking underground rockers, from the English Beat to R.E.M. Like most great labels, they stayed around a little too long, so their message was diluted toward the end of their life, but in their prime, they were a diverse, exceptional label. Since it sticks to the label’s crossover hits, On the Charts: IRS Records 1979-1994 doesn’t quite give an accurate portrait of the label’s history (important bands like Let’s Active never had a hit, so they’re absent from this compilation), but it does have a good cross-section of the label’s finest singles. In the process, it paints an accurate portrait of post-punk’s evolution from new wave to alt-rock. Because it takes its subtitle seriously, the collection does contain a few duds — dada’s “Dizz Knee Land” happens to be the newest thing here, but it already sounds more dated than Wall of Voodoo’s “Mexican Radio” — but the best moments — the Go-Go’s’ “Our Lips Are Sealed,” Timbuk 3′s “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades,” Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy,” General Public’s “Tenderness,” R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” and the English Beat’s perfect “Save It For Later” — illustrate what a great label IRS was, which is reason enough to hear this collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Pop music stars in many of the most exciting and successful British films–from Performance to Trainspotting, from A Hard Day’s Night to Human Traffic. Other films using pop music might be more obscure but include many demonstrating a boldness and imagination rarely matched in other areas of British cinema. And of course there are the rare but prized cameos from a huge variety of other musicians and their songs in the most unexpected of places. This book tells the story and records the facts of the pop-film relationship decade by decade. It is the most systematic guide to where and how pop appears in British cinema.Pop in British Cinema includes:* Decade by decade commentary and systematic listings of films with pop music* Comprehensive referencing of all British feature films using music from the 50s to the end of the century* Illustrations and descriptions of the changing ways of using pop in British film * Listings of "band" movies and indexes to musicians, directors, and film titlesFor researchers and the curious alike this is an easy and fascinating reference source. It represents both a first history of pop music in British cinema and a mine of trivia questions for music and film buffs of all descriptions.
